One of the biggest challenges for small consulting businesses is finding new customers to sustain their business. Due to the COVID-19 crisis, numerous companies have paused the engagement of new consulting firms and, if at all, have extended existing engagements. This may have a sustainable impact on the consulting industry on the long run, as we might see the domination of the Big Five increase even more.

The good news is that the increased acceptance of digital offerings and virtual collaboration holds enormous potential for small and medium sized consulting companies. A highly promising way to scale your business by using the productization model.

A productized consulting firm is one that sells a (digital) product instead or in addition to providing services. This shift from services to products changes the way you do business, as you’ll need to develop a product or product-service combination that you can sell. As productized consulting firm you will then offer your clients a package with a variety of products, ranging from management consulting on demand to marketing strategy guides. This package will be attractive to clients because it provides them with fast and easy to implement options to approach their business challenge.

A productized consulting firm may be even able to demand higher rates per hour than a traditional consulting firm, as consulting-on-demand service is only requested by the customer when it truly generates business value. The productized consulting firm will therefore have a way to differentiate themselves from their competition, which includes providing on-point customer service. If you’re looking for a way to scale your business, consider using the productization model.
